God Scroll is run by Arkadiusz Sroczyk in Poland, who is the data controller for the app and this website. This policy covers the God Scroll app and its widgets, and this website. You can reach us at support@godscroll.app.
The short version
God Scroll has no accounts. Your name, your answers from the first screens, your reading progress, notes and streak are stored on your iPhone. We can't see them, and the app doesn't send them to Superwall or to us.
The app does go online. It downloads explanations and audio, and it uses Apple and Superwall to handle your subscription. Superwall receives a random ID, device details, your rough location from your IP address, and your subscription events. We use these to run and improve the subscription. We don't run ads, and we never sell your data.
What stays on your phone
The app stores these on your iPhone, in its own storage:
- Your answers from the first screens: your first name, age range, how you found us, your history with the Bible and your church background.
- Your place in each translation, chapters you've read and finished, and the date you last read.
- Verses you like, bookmark or save, and the notes you write.
- Your daily goal, the days that kept your streak, and your reading plan progress.
- Recent searches, Bible words you've looked up or saved, and your settings (translation, text size, appearance, audio, reminders).
- Audio chapters you've downloaded, and copies of any licensed chapters you've opened.
The widgets read a small summary (today's verse, your streak, your place) from a shared area on the same phone, called an App Group. It never leaves the device.
Most of this is included in your iPhone's own backup to iCloud or your computer, which Apple or your computer protects. Licensed chapters and audio files are left out of backups.
We can't see any of it. Deleting the app deletes all of it from your phone.
What goes over the internet
Explanations
The app checks our server for new Explain it easier content and downloads it when there is some. The server is a Cloudflare Worker. Each request carries your IP address and the standard information every iPhone app sends, such as the app version and iOS version. It carries no account, cookie or reading history, and it doesn't say which verse you're reading.
Licensed translations
When NKJV, NLT and CSB are available in the app, opening one of their chapters for the first time asks our server for it. The request says which translation, book and chapter, and carries your IP address and the same standard information. The server uses your IP address to limit each address to 120 requests a minute, so the service can't be abused. It fetches the text from API.Bible (run by the American Bible Society) and keeps a copy of each chapter for 14 days. API.Bible sees our server's request, never your IP address or anything about you. Chapters saved on your phone are deleted after 28 days, as the publishers' terms require.
Audio
When you play or save the Berean Standard Bible narration, the app downloads the chapter's audio file from openbible.com, which hosts the recording. That server sees your IP address and which chapter was requested, as any website would. Their privacy practices are their own.
Links you tap
Source links in explanations, book guides and the Sources page (for example USCCB, BibleProject or OpenBible.info) open in Safari only when you tap them.
Sharing
When you copy or share a verse or a Verse Photo, the app hands it to the iOS share sheet. Where it goes next is up to you and the app you choose.
Crash reports
If you turned on "Share with App Developers" in your iPhone's Analytics settings, Apple sends us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. You control this in Settings, Privacy & Security, Analytics & Improvements.
Subscriptions
Apple processes every payment. We never see your card, name, email or Apple Account. The app asks Apple on your phone whether your subscription is active, so reading still works offline. Apple's own privacy policy covers what it does with your payment.
Superwall (Nest 22, Inc.) handles the purchase request from our subscription screen and gives us subscription reports. It works for us as a data processor. It receives:
- A random ID made by the app and your device's vendor ID, which is the same for our apps on your phone but differs from other companies' apps. Neither includes your name or Apple Account.
- Device and app details: device model, iOS version, app version, install date, language, region, currency, time zone and display settings.
- Your rough location worked out from your IP address: country, region and city.
- Usage: how long ago you installed the app, and when and how often the subscription screen was shown.
- Subscription details from the app and from Apple: your status, plan, price, country, transaction ID, and events such as a trial starting, turning into a paid subscription, renewing, ending or being refunded.
We use this to make subscriptions work and to see how they perform. It isn't used for advertising or to track you across other companies' apps. Nothing you answered in the first screens is sent to Superwall.
Reminders, including the note three days before your trial ends and the daily reading reminder, are scheduled on your phone as local notifications. No server sends them.
Permissions
The app asks for two permissions, and works without either:
- Notifications, for the reminders above. If you say no, you won't get the trial reminder. You can change this in your iPhone's Settings.
- Adding photos, only the first time you save a Verse Photo. It's add-only, so the app can't see your existing photos.
Audio keeps playing in the background while you listen, which needs no permission.
This website
This site is a set of plain pages served by Cloudflare. It sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies: its fonts and pictures are on the same server. Cloudflare sees your IP address and the page requested to deliver it and protect against attacks, and keeps logs for a short time.
If you write to us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to answer you. Your message is stored with our email provider.
Why we may use your data
If you're in the EU or UK, these are our legal bases under the GDPR:
- To provide what you asked for (contract, Article 6(1)(b)): delivering explanations, audio and licensed chapters, handling your subscription, and answering your messages.
- Our legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)): keeping the server and website secure, stopping abuse, fixing errors, and understanding how the subscription performs. You can object to this at any time.
You don't have to give us any personal data by law. Without the data above, the app can't deliver content or a subscription. We make no decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similar effects.
Who receives data
We never sell your data. These companies receive it to run the service:
| Company | What for |
|---|---|
| Apple | Payments, subscriptions, app delivery and crash reports |
| Superwall (Nest 22, Inc.) | Purchase requests and subscription reports |
| Cloudflare | Running our server and this website |
| Our email provider | Storing messages you send us |
Some of these companies, or the companies working for them, are in the United States or elsewhere outside the European Economic Area, so your data may be processed there. We rely on their data processing terms to protect it. Write to us if you'd like to know more about these safeguards. We may also share data if the law requires it.
How long data is kept
- On your phone: until you delete it or delete the app.
- Server logs: up to 7 days.
- Rate limiting: your IP address is counted for about a minute and isn't stored after that.
- Superwall records: for as long as we use Superwall, and then deleted under its terms.
- Emails to us: as long as we need them to help you, and no longer than 2 years after our last message.
Your rights
You can ask us for access to your data, or to correct, delete, restrict or move it, and you can object to our use of it. We'll answer within 30 days. You don't need us for what's on your phone: deleting the app removes it.
We hold no name or account for you, so Superwall's records aren't filed under your name. If you want them looked up or deleted, write to us and we'll work out together how to find them. This may need a receipt or transaction ID from Apple.
If you think we've handled your data wrongly, you can complain to your local data protection authority. In Poland that's the President of the Personal Data Protection Office (UODO), ul. Stawki 2, 00-193 Warsaw, uodo.gov.pl.
If you live in California, you have similar rights to know about and delete your data, and we don't sell or share it for advertising.
God Scroll is for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect data from children.
Changes and contact
If what the app collects changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change ships. Questions about privacy: support@godscroll.app.
